This was all mixed on the fly, so we still need to learn how to make it automated. I apologise for this being extremely weird, but it was just a quick test to see what sort of functions this software offered. The left fader would change the opacity of the top picture and the other fader would fade through the colours. The far left C key would select one picture, then D key would select the other picture. We manually chose some functions that we wanted mixing by syncing it with certain buttons on the the MIDI. Nick and I got round to playing with Modul8 and we mixed two photos that I had on my computer from a silly photobooth session. We go the hang of it quickly and we are going to focus more on learning how to use the MIDI and Modul8 as well as designing and creating the visuals. We also changed the colours and zoom level on the clips. We played around with resizing and reshaping to match the blocks. Nick and I gave a test run of MadMapper and, we realise that this software is very easy to use and fairly self explanatory. ![]() We want this project to help out George just as much as it will us, and we will allow him to have a say in these areas so that he can use as part of a promotional showreel. Issues like song choice and visual design will need to be discussed properly, and we also need to decide on filming/recording dates so that we have a goal. Lots of time researching into the software and hardware is going to be needed so that Nick and I can complete this project. Jordan knows how to use both, and Phil mentioned that a MIDI has been used to control visuals before on a project for DMP so we know that it will be possible to achieve this. I have no idea on how to use Modul8 and a MIDI and neither does Nick, so it is going to be a very difficult task to get the swing of it. However we did think that maybe live streaming the recording could be a could idea, I don’t know if it would work but it could certainly add to not only our skill sets but the performance aspect of the brief. ![]() We probably aren’t going to perform this in the conventional sense, because for the final video we want it to be cut and have multiple angles. We will probably ask George to perform a cover of a fairly popular song, and one that isn’t too repetitive the entire way through, so that the visuals are interesting. ![]() After that the visuals would probably come much more naturally. We also need to pick a song that would work extremely well for drum solos. I feel as though this project is going to have a huge learning curve in certain software and hardware, but I am prepared to challenge myself and experiment in things that I have not tried before it’s one of the reasons why this course is great.Ĭurrently we haven’t made any concept art but over the next week or so we will be looking through many videos for influence on the style of the visuals etc. This is different from a standard VJ projection, as everything will be preset instead of being mixed live. Phil really liked this concept and said that he would buy in some LEDs and we could and should use them to add to the performance. The idea is to link an electric drum kit to a MIDI and then through software such as Modul8, link the drums and symbols that George hits to project visuals onto the wall through mapping software such as MadMapper. Nick has a friend (George) who is a professional drummer and has played for many bands, and will soon be signed to a band in America, so clearly we have some serious talent to work with here. We discussed the idea and began developing it into an interesting and hopefully exciting performance idea. We both had a concept of having some sort of device or software have preset option to project certain things onto a wall, that are user driven. Except I would use iPads, and obviously an entirely different song, but it would take so long to choreograph etc, I much prefer the main idea, which I will explain in the next post!Įven though this has been set out to be a individual project, Phil has given permission to Nick and I to make this project together.
